The Infamous Story of Emmett Till
Emmett Louis Till was
one of the most infamous stories of all time. This sparked a revolution in
1955. Growing up in Chicago, Illinois
Till lived in a pretty secular neighborhood full of African Americans. One
summer according to Anderson in the article titled “Widow of Emmett Till dies
quietly, notoriously. Emmett Till was born in Money Mississippi during the time
period of slavery and the Civil Rights Movement. Moving back and forth between
Chicago, he went home to “Money” to visit every so often. So hanging out his
cousins one day, they venture into this convenient store where he was dared to
whistle to a white lady. So of course him only being fourteen years old he did.
It. Well, a couple of days later, till was dead with a decapitated body, and a
bomb wire wrapped around his body the Mississippi River. Murdered and killed by
two white men, one being her husband, and the other her brother. Till was
kidnapped during his sleep at his family’s house in Mississippi and beaten to
death where he was never able to whistle at anyone again. Of course, during
that time they thought it was okay, and acceptable to kill someone of a
different color because in their minds we were not equals to them. Men of
higher authority felt the need to take actions into their own hands. Yes, Till
most definitely deserved a whooping or even punishment of some sort, but not to
be murdered. In July of 1955 the two men that murdered till were acquitted by
an all- Caucasian jury in Tallahatchie County. Emmett’s till case sparked
Martin Luther King dream and this is one of the reasons why we are looked upon
as equals today.
Almost six decades later we face the same problem with three young black males and this were their stories.
